Exploring Miami – Beyond the Beach
Discovering the Other Side of Miami: Culture, Vibes & Waterfront Views
If you think Miami is just about the beach, think again. While South Beach gets most of the spotlight, the city of Miami itself has plenty to offer – from vibrant neighborhoods to waterfront hangouts and cultural must-sees. If you have a few days to spare, take the time to explore beyond the shoreline. It’s worth it!
🏨 Hotel Tips: Stay Smart in the City
We stayed at both hotels – before and after our Carribean Cruise and liked them both!

Get Your Bearings: Hop-On, Hop-Off Sightseeing Tour
A classic for a reason! These open-top double-decker buses are a great way to get an overview of the city, especially if it’s your first time in Miami. The route includes highlights like Downtown, Wynwood, Little Havana, and more – with the freedom to explore at your own pace.
📍 Highlights:
- Easy way to cover a lot of ground
- Great for photography from the top deck
- Informative audio guide included
🎉 Fun Fact:
We had to duck more than once to avoid some rather enthusiastic tree branches. We still joke that we barely made it out alive – Miami almost took us down, branch by branch!
Soak Up the Vibe in Little Havana
One of the most memorable stops? Little Havana. The colorful facades, the smell of strong Cuban coffee, the sound of live music spilling out onto the sidewalks – it truly felt like being transported straight to Cuba.
We strolled through Calle Ocho, watched locals play dominoes in Domino Park, and couldn’t resist sampling an authentic Cuban sandwich, accompanied by a Mojito (of course).
It’s a lively, cultural, and fun neighborhood that really shouldn’t be missed.
Chill & Sip at Bayside Marketplace
If there’s one place in Miami we kept coming back to, it was Bayside Marketplace – every single evening. Why? Because it’s just that good. Nestled right by the water, this vibrant open-air complex feels like a perfect blend of festival vibes, waterfront relaxation, shopping, and dining – all in one place.
✨ What makes it special?
- Live music fills the air most evenings – the perfect backdrop for sipping cocktails.
- Waterfront seating with dreamy views (we even spotted dolphins!).
- Souvenirs and shops galore, from quirky to classic.
- Bars and restaurants for every taste – our go-to was Margaritaville, always buzzing, always fun.
- The giant Ferris wheel adds a touch of magic and makes the perfect photo backdrop.
We spent a lovely evening there sipping cocktails by the pier – and were even lucky enough to spot a dolphin!
It’s also home to the Hard Rock Café (worth a stop!) and offers stunning views over the bay, especially at sunset.
Whether you’re in the mood for some laid-back drinks, people-watching, or a little retail therapy – Bayside delivers. It’s touristy, yes, but in the best possible way. A must for your Miami itinerary!
🍹 Highlight Box: Margaritaville Miami Bayside
🌴 Location: Bayside Marketplace
🍔 What we loved: Great views, tasty food, a breezy atmosphere – and their fun gift shop!
🥂 Tip: Come for the signature cocktails, stay for the views of the ferris wheel and water. Ideal for a chilled-out lunch or sunset dinner.
🎉 Vibe: Vacation mode ON.
Must-Do: Millionaire’s Row Cruise
To see Miami from the water, we joined a Millionaire’s Row Cruise with Island Queen Cruises & Tours. Sure, some of the “celebrity mansion” stories felt a little exaggerated (not all of them actually live there anymore), but it was a scenic and relaxing way to enjoy the city skyline and learn a bit about Miami’s glittery real estate scene.
Cruising along the bay with a breeze in your hair and a drink in hand? No complaints here.
Jungle Island Adventure
For something a little different, we visited Jungle Island, a tropical-themed eco-adventure park combining exotic animals, lush gardens, and fun attractions. It’s especially great if you’re traveling with kids, but we adults had a surprisingly good time too – think lemurs, parrots, and shows in a colorful, relaxed setting.
Final Thoughts: There’s More to Miami Than Sand & Surf
Miami surprised me – in the best possible way. It’s not just sun and palm trees. It’s culture, history, color, rhythm, food, and soul. Exploring the city gave me a new appreciation for what lies beyond South Beach: neighborhoods with heart, places that pulse with energy, and waterfront spots where you can just be.
If you’re visiting the area, take at least two or three days to explore Miami itself. You won’t regret it.
