Helsinki in a Day: From Coffee Stops to Stunning Sights
I was on my way to Tampere when a friend picked me up at Helsink airport and offered to show me around Helsinki. During our short 7-hour visit there, we managed to explore some of the city’s iconic spots, soaking in its cozy, laid-back vibe. Known for its beautiful parks, historic buildings, Scandinavian design, and waterfront cafés, it’s a city where old-world charm meets modern design. Helsinki’s rich Russian influence is still visible in its architecture, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square
We kicked off our day at the impressive Helsinki Cathedral, which majestically overlooks Senate Square. Surrounded by neoclassical buildings, the square exudes grandeur. At its center stands a statue of Tsar Alexander II, reminding visitors of Finland’s time under Russian rule. In summer, this area becomes especially vibrant, with locals and tourists gathering on the cathedral steps to sip coffee and bask in the sun. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape, there’s a small café in the crypt of the cathedral, offering cake and quiet moments in an otherwise bustling area.
Strolling Along Esplanadi
After taking in the views from Senate Square, we wandered towards Esplanadi, Helsinki’s iconic promenade. This long, tree-lined park is the heart of the city, offering shady pathways, elegant benches, and a lively atmosphere. Opened in 1812, Esplanadi Park features beautiful old trees and a stage for concerts. It’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Along the promenade, you’ll find many cafés and bars where you can relax with a view of the harbor. The Esplanadi leads down to the harbor area. It’s a bustling spot where cruise ships dock and people enjoy waterfront dining with scenic views of the sea. A lively market is also held here, offering local delicacies. Boat tours depart from the area as well, making it a perfect spot to spend some time.
Shopping and Street Strolling
For shopping enthusiasts, Helsinki has plenty to offer. Take a stroll along Pohjoisesplanadi, a one-kilometer stretch lined with shops, boutiques, and cafés. Located in the city center, it’s a great place to explore, whether you’re window shopping or looking for unique Finnish products. Another popular shopping street is Aleksanterinkatu, where you’ll find a mix of international brands and Finnish fashion. If you are into malls, Helsinki won’t disappoint you, either. I loved Kauppakeskus Citycenter. It’s conveniently located opposite the Helsinki Central Railway Station and has over 70 shops, cafés and restaurants. There’s something there for everyone!
Uspenski Cathedral and Waterfront Views
As we walked along the promenade, we couldn’t miss the majestic Uspenski Cathedral, which we admired from the water’s edge. The largest Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe, it features thirteen towers, representing Jesus and the twelve apostles. The interior is said to be equally impressive, with mosaics and golden accents that showcase Helsinki’s religious and cultural significance.
Finnish Treats: Coffee and Smashburgers

This burger joint serves handmade artisan burgers, using nearly 100% domestic ingredients. The restaurant also offers a fantastic view of the main train station, making it the perfect place to relax and refuel.
