Bahamas Cruise with Freedom of the Seas – A short trip, big Memories
When I go on vacation, I always try to include places I’ve never been and things I’ve never done before. I’d been to Miami – but never on one of those giant cruise ships leaving from PortMiami. That was about to change: I booked a three-day Bahamas cruise with Freedom of the Seas!, and spoiler alert – it was amazing.

🎒 What to Pack for a Bahamas Cruise
Planning a short island cruise? Here’s what I found most useful:
✅ Light, breathable clothes – think linen, cotton, and easy sundresses
🩱 Swimsuits – bring at least two, so you’re never stuck with a soggy one
🕶️ Sunglasses & sunhat – island sun is no joke
🌞 Reef-safe sunscreen – strong SPF and ocean-friendly
👟 Comfortable sandals or water shoes – for beach days & excursions
💧 Reusable water bottle – hydration is key
🧼 Mini first-aid kit – plasters, painkillers, seasickness tablets
📱 Phone charger & waterproof pouch – perfect for beach & pig selfies 🐷
Bonus tip: Pack a light sweater or pashmina – the air-con on board can be chilly!
Check-In & Boarding: Easy Like Sunday Morning
From July 21st to 24th, 2023, we sailed from Miami to the Bahamas aboard the majestic Freedom of the Seas. And let me tell you – the boarding process was as smooth as a sea breeze. From the moment we arrived at the port, everything was taken care of: luggage? Gone. Check-in and security? Surprisingly fast and well organized.
Within 30 minutes, we stepped aboard this floating city – and instantly entered vacation mode.
First Impressions? Wow.
Boarding felt like stepping into another world. The ship is massive – one of the largest and most luxurious in the Royal Caribbean fleet – and absolutely packed with things to see and do. We were welcomed by friendly staff, upbeat music, and the feeling that these three days were going to be special.
Cruise Hack: Download the Royal Caribbean App
The Royal Caribbean app turned out to be a lifesaver. We installed it before the trip, and it helped with everything – from orientation on board to booking excursions with just a few taps.
✅ Top Tip
As soon as you’re in your cabin, check out the excursion options and book what excites you most – the good stuff sells out quickly! We went for two experiences:
🐷 Swimming with the black pigs on Coco Cay (bucket list!)
🚐 A comfy 3-hour minivan tour of Nassau – ideal for hot weather.

On Board the Freedom of the Seas – Our Floating Playground
Let’s talk about the ship itself for a moment – because Freedom of the Seas truly was a destination in its own right.
We started each day with a delicious breakfast at the Windjammer Café, overlooking the glittering sea. It offered everything from fresh fruit to international comfort food, and the views were just unbeatable. For lunch, it was back to the buffet or a quick snack by the pool. But dinner was a real treat: each evening we enjoyed a three-course à la carte meal in the elegant Main Dining Room on Deck 3 – new menu every night, great service, and plenty of options for all tastes.
After dinner, we wandered down the Royal Promenade, the vibrant heart of the ship. Bars, boutiques, pizza slices at midnight, street-style performances – it had a bit of everything. While some guests hit the casino or nightclub, we opted for the theatre shows. The talent was incredible, and the productions were on par with what you’d expect in a city venue.
Need a break from all the action? The Solarium was our favorite daytime escape: adults-only, serene, with comfy loungers and a pool surrounded by tropical plants. We didn’t try the Vitality Spa, but it looked divine. And for the thrill-seekers? You could try surfing on the FlowRider, scaling the climbing wall, or ziplining over the pool deck. Yep, all that – on a boat.

A Perfect Day at Coco Cay – Black Pigs & Blue Water
Our first port day brought us to Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas – and the name says it all: Perfect Day at Coco Cay.
We were welcomed with upbeat music and blue skies. While some guests chased thrills at the waterpark or zoomed down ziplines, we chose the chill route – and it was the perfect call. We spent the day soaking in the warm sea, lounging under palm trees, and enjoying lunch from the island BBQ spots (included and delicious!).

Swimming with the famous black pigs
The highlight of our day? Swimming with the island’s famous black pigs – a true bucket list moment.
We boarded a speedboat that took us to a small nearby island where the pigs live. After a short safety briefing, we got to meet these surprisingly friendly animals up close. Splashing in the shallow water alongside them, feeding them, and even holding baby piglets – it was such a unique and joyful experience.
Even a bit of rain couldn’t dampen the magic. The water was still warm, and we returned to the ship salty, sandy, and completely thrilled.
These sweet creatures, known for their friendly nature and love for the water, made for an unforgettable experience. Splashing around with them while taking in the breathtaking surroundings was a true bucket-list moment. I didn’t even mind the rain and the temporary dark sky due to it – the water felt so warm and refreshing, and it was a true treat to hang out with the pigs. We were also fortunate to meet and hold some of the baby pigs.
Vibrant Nassau: Culture, Color & a Touch of Rum
The next morning, we woke up to a new view: Nassau, the vibrant capital of the Bahamas – and the final stop of our cruise. As we pulled into port, we spotted no less than three other cruise ships already docked. Clearly, this colorful island is a popular one!
While many cruise passengers made a beeline for the iconic Atlantis Paradise Island Resort, we had other plans: diving into Nassau’s local culture. We spent the morning strolling through the historic downtown, admiring pastel-colored colonial buildings and browsing lively markets filled with local crafts, bright fabrics, and handmade souvenirs. This part of town has such a distinctive Bahamian flair – vibrant, cheerful, and full of life.
To make the most of our short stay (and escape the sweltering midday sun!), we booked a 3-hour minivan island tour. It was absolutely worth it: we zipped from stop to stop in air-conditioned comfort, tasting rum cake at a local factory, enjoying a brief beach visit, and taking in panoramic coastal views.
Fun fact? While we were sweating in summer dresses and sunscreen, some locals were wrapped up in hoodies and long pants – apparently, it was one of their colder days. Perspective is everything!

Final Thoughts: A Journey to Remember
This short cruise with Freedom of the Seas was the perfect blend of adventure, luxury, and laid-back island life. I had dreamed of stepping onto one of those massive ships leaving Miami – and I’m so glad I finally did.
From swimming with the black pigs (yes, really!) to sipping mocktails on the top deck at sunset, every moment felt special. Whether you’re a cruise newbie like me or a seasoned sailor, this route is packed with highlights.
And while it’s impossible to see everything in just three days, what you do experience will stay with you – the warmth of the ocean, the taste of island BBQ, the sparkle of turquoise waters.
Would I do it again? Absolutely. And next time, I might just book a longer cruise… the Bahamas have more stories to tell.
