Zodiac Adventure: Exploring Nova Scotia’s Coastline
As our time in Nova Scotia was winding down, we couldn’t resist one more adventure before we left. This time, we opted for a Zodiac boat tour. After an unforgettable kayak adventure, we wanted to experience the stunning wild coastline from a different perspective. Last year, I took a RIB boat tour in Norway – so I knew this was going to be thrilling!
What’s a Zodiac Boat?
If you’ve never been on a Zodiac, imagine a small but mighty inflatable boat, built for speed and agility. The boat is light, fast, and ideal for navigating the narrow, rocky inlets of Nova Scotia’s coastline. Ours was a 12-person boat. It was just the right size to offer an exciting experience without the crowds of a large tour.
Ransom’s Lunenburg Retreat: Our Guide to the South Shore
We booked our Zodiac adventure with Ransom’s Lunenburg Retreat. Jason and Deb, a wonderful husband-and-wife team, run the most incredible boat tours! They offer a fascinating, two-hour coastal journey on an expedition Zodiac, where you’ll get a crash course on everything from local geology to marine life, all while cruising past some of the most beautiful and remote parts of Nova Scotia’s South Shore.
Their passion for Nova Scotia’s history, wildlife, and landscapes really shone through during the tour. They were so knowledgeable, offering great insights, and keeping the tour fun with humorous anecdotes about the region. Both Deb and Jason are fantastic storytellers and you can tell they live their dream.
The Drive from Lunenburg: A Scenic Journey
The tour is just a short 10-minute drive from downtown Lunenburg, and along the way, you’ll pass some adorable spots perfect for a quick photo op. We could already tell this was going to be a special experience. Upon arrival, you’ll park right by their beige house—a charming spot that sets the tone for the relaxed vibe of the day.
On Arrival
We had already filled out the waiver online, which made the check-in process quick and easy. When we arrived, Jason greeted each guest personally, engaging in some light small talk. He asked where everyone was from and making us feel right at home. Before we set off, we had the chance to check out a small gallery inside a hut. It was filled with beautiful photos of the Zodiac boat in action and the stunning coastline we were about to explore.
Since there were a lot of sign-ups that day, we split into two groups. Jason took three families, each with four people, on one Zodiac, and Deb took us (a group of six couples/friends) on another. Afterward, we were fitted with Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs). Jason also gave us some helpful tips on how to dress for the ride. He emphasized that even on warm days, it can get quite chilly on the water so it was important to layer up appropriately.
Exploring Nova Scotia’s South Shore
Once everyone had their PFDs on, we climbed aboard the Zodiac. With a roar of the engine, we pushed off from the dock. The feeling of being on the open water, with the wind in our faces and the waves crashing against the boat, was exhilarating. After a short safety briefing, we were off, speeding through the crystal-clear waters of the South Shore.
As we cruised along, we were immersed in the wild beauty of Nova Scotia’s coastline. The views were jaw-dropping. We passed through Tanner’s Pass, Schooner’s Cove, and Heckman’s Island-. Throughout the ride, Jason and Deb shared fascinating facts about the local geology, marine life, and the rich history of the area.
But what really made this adventure unforgettable was the wildlife! We saw an abundance of seals, sunning themselves on the rocks and playing in the water. Some of them even followed our boat in an attempt to check us out! Very cute! We also had the privilege of spotting bald eagles soaring overhead and ospreys diving for fish. At one point, we passed a small island packed with cormorants, their black wings spread out to dry in the sun. It felt like we were in a nature documentary, but even better because we were experiencing it firsthand.
Jason and Deb also stopped on small islands, beaching the Zodiac twice to give us the chance to stretch our legs and explore. They took the time to explain the history of the area, pointing out hidden coves and unique flora along the way.

Why Zodiac Tours Are the Best
What made the Zodiac tour so special was how up-close and personal we got with the landscape. On such a small, agile boat, we could explore hidden corners of the coastline that larger tours couldn’t reach. There’s something magical about feeling the water, the wind, and the waves, and really connecting with the environment around you. Plus, with only a small group on board, it was much more intimate and personal than other, crowded tours.
After the Adventure: Snacks & Reflection
After the tour, we were treated to snacks and drinks, and we had the chance to sit down with Jason and Deb to chat about the tour and reflect on our experiences. It was like finishing an adventure with friends—no rush, just great conversation and shared memories of an incredible day on the water.
